###BREATHTAKING BAVIERAThe South of Spain has long been a leading destination for golfing enthusiasts from home and abroad, not only for the number of courses it boasts, but also for the quality of the courses dotted throughout the province of Malaga. There are over seventy golf courses on the ‘Costa del Golf’ each offering something unique.
One such beauty is that of Baviera Golf Club located alongside the well-known tourist resort of Nerja.
>*Baviera Golf Course is set within a valley that boasts a perfect mirco climate for playing golf, bordering the Sierra Tejada mountain range and the Alhama & Almijara Nature Park, only 55km east of Malaga Airport. The course is surrounded by tropical avocado and mango crops and you might even be lucky to see a peacock or two wandering around the greens.*
Designed by José María Cañizares, it is a relatively flat 18-hole course characterised by open fairways offering plenty of movement and a wide variety of different obstacles. According to the Managing Director of Baviera Golf, Ignacio Iturbe, the most emblematic hole is no. 12, a 532-metre par-5 hole:
“*Along the right-hand side, a stream runs from the tee to the green. It is located 200 metres from the beach, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains that protect it, and the sea as its crowning glory.*”
The Clubhouse underwent extensive renovations in 2008 and now offers state of the art facilities with ample parking spaces, changing rooms, not to mention Jacuzzi & sauna with gymnasium and something that will appeal to the majority of holiday-makers, they even offer childcare services. The golf pro, Antonio Salado is on hand to ask advice and offers a fully stocked pro shop with Club rental from Taylormade and Callaway to name a few.
Baviera Golf Academy offers expert tuition by Miguel Angel and Francisco Javier Natoli Cañete, who during their long years of experience in the field of amateur and professional players, will provide all the necessary knowledge for learning this wonderful sport. These classes are focused for groups or individuals who want to enjoy an unforgettable day playing golf. The price for Clinics will depend on the number of people and for the duration – so best to contact the club directly.
Along with the new Clubhouse, saw the birth of the new restaurant under Chef Mame whose Gastronomic menu never fails to impress. The Clubhouse offers 2 main catering outlets, catering for up to 250 sit down or over 500 for a cocktail affair – both locations offer impressive terraces overlooking the Axarquía with secluded enclaves to enjoy an unforgettable evening.
In the main restaurant you can find from a fantastic menu of the chef from Monday to Friday, to a large and light snack menu if what fancy the players is something fast and dynamic or why not treat yourself to the Gastronomic menu created especially by Our kitchen team and Chef Mamé.
With fantastic offers available year round – some Summer Twilight offers are not to be missed – €70.00 for 18 holes for two people and a golf buggy (2017).
>*With Nerja town centre closeby, there is endless possibilities for your accommodation requirements, the club’s website also has some suggestions to point you in the right direction.*
Nerja was built from 1487 and one of its most iconic historical landmarks is the famous “Balcony of Europe”, a mirador over the sea built from the ruins of an old mediaeval castle. The city centre has preserved all the essence of Andalusia with its whitewashed houses and geraniums in the balconies. It also offers the visitor a rich variety of restaurants and bars where they can enjoy the quality and variety of local gastronomy.
If you are having a day or two off the course, the beaches are perfect to enjoy the Mediterranean sun and practice water sports for all the family. The famous beach of Burriana is awarded the blue flag of the UE every year. Nerja also has a wide cultural offer from which one must highlight the Cuevas (Caves) de Nerja festival (in June/July). The caves can be visited all year round, are a natural prodigy and the third most visited monument in Spain.
If you are thinking of planning a Winter Golf Getaway and staying away from the Summer hustle and bustle, one thing that you should know, that is closeby to Baviera is the stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range. Thanks to investments made back in the late 90s, it boasts one of the best ski resorts in Spain. The season usually is one of the longest in Europe (from the end of November to mid- May) and it is not rare to be able to enjoy skiing in spring at temperatures which let you wear your swimming costume.
What is most attractive in Sierra Nevada is, no doubt, its great weather. Over 70% of the days in the skiing season are sunny, which allows you to ski in unsurpassable conditions. Its altitude (2.100m to 300m over sea level) practically guarantees snow in winter.
With all that Costa del Sol has to offer; accessibility – with easy access from all major European cities, affordability – with incredible packages available year-round, diversity – from golden beaches, green fairways or snowy white ski slopes, surely there is something for everyone at this incredible location.
